ACT UP Entertainment: Can you share the backstory of how Blood Buffalo came together in 2014, and what inspired the formation of the band?

Blood Buffalo: Yup, so way back just before coming together the brothers Caleb and Nate started jamming and writing songs, but needed to expand the sound. Enter Damien, the brothers found him through the grapevine of musicians in the local music scene and clicked. Damien knew a drummer, Chops, who had some wicked mutton chops and was keen to start a new project. First jam was in the garage of Damien’s parents house. Our inspiration came from all the ‘greats’ out there making their way in music haha nah, we just enjoy playing music together.

ACT UP Entertainment: The band's sound is described as a "bluesy, hard rock sound turned up to 11." How did you arrive at this distinctive musical style, and were there specific influences that shaped your sound?

Blood Buffalo: We draw a lot of our our sound from our individual music taste such as The White Strips, Wolfmother, Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, The Strokes , Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and The Growlers

ACT UP Entertainment: This Friday night Blood Buffalo are emerging from a hiatus. Can you tell us what led to the hiatus, and what motivated the decision to come back together?

Blood Buffalo: A hiatus is a bit of a stretch, we like to think of it as a bear waking up from a small nap. We have always intended on continuing Blood Buffalo, however life and world events have put a spanner in the works. We’ve all been working on our side projects as well, for example Chops has just come from touring California with his other project, Zephyr Love. However we have plans with Blood Buffalo for the early new year, keep an eye out.

ACT UP Entertainment: Your song "Days Gone By" was featured in a live video as part of The Live Rooms by Scallywag Records. Can you share your experience recording that video and collaborating with Scallywag Records on this project?

Blood Buffalo: Recording with Scallywag Records team was super fun, they are amazing at what they do and had some cool ideas to help make our sound even more epic. All round would recommend! We plan on working with them closely for our next album.

ACT UP Entertainment: Wreck The Halls on December 1st is a diverse musical event supporting the Auckland City Mission. Can you share what significance it holds for Blood Buffalo to participate in this charity gig, and what impact you hope the event will have on the community?

ACT UP Entertainment: How do you prepare for a live show, and what can fans expect from your performance at Wreck The Halls on Friday?

It’s great to be participating in another event the lounge is promoting, particularly as this one is for a good cause to help those in need. Ding Dong Lounge is the place where Blood Buffalo had one of our first gigs back in 2014, (obviously heaps since then) feels great to be back.
